Water damage & insurance

Clear records. Better questions.

A practical guide to organizing the information your insurer and restoration provider may need.

The cause and the policy both matter.

Texas Department of Insurance guidance distinguishes sudden accidental water damage from flooding and ongoing leaks. Policies vary. Explain the facts accurately and ask your insurer which policy provisions apply.

Cleanup is not a coverage decision.

Houston Water Recovery does not adjust claims, sell insurance, or promise payment. Restoration professionals explain their work; your insurer determines policy coverage.

Keep a useful damage record.

  • Dated photos and video taken from safe locations.
  • A timeline of when damage was noticed and any known source.
  • Claim number and a record of conversations.
  • Estimates, work authorizations, receipts, and invoices.
  • Any equipment or moisture records supplied by the provider.

Questions for your insurer.

  • Which coverage and deductible may apply?
  • What documentation do you need before damaged items are removed?
  • How should emergency mitigation and later repairs be handled?
  • Are additional living expenses relevant to this claim?
  • Who should receive the estimates and invoices?

Questions for the restoration provider.

Ask whether the estimate includes extraction, material removal, drying equipment, monitoring, contents handling, and reconstruction. Confirm who is responsible for payment if insurance covers only part of the work or denies the claim.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered.

Does homeowners insurance cover water damage?

Coverage depends on the cause and your policy. Sudden accidental water damage and outside flooding can be treated differently. Your insurer determines coverage; cleanup estimates do not guarantee claim approval.

Do you handle or negotiate my insurance claim?

No. Houston Water Recovery is an information and referral website, not an insurer, insurance adjuster, or legal adviser. Direct claim and coverage questions to your insurer or a properly authorized professional.

Does requesting a quote make restoration services free?

No. Asking for a quote does not make inspection, mitigation, equipment, or repairs free. Confirm any charges before a visit or authorization.
